About this Site: Philosophy
I am not a graphic designer, nor an HTML-guru. But I have seen enough poorly designed web pages (some of my own creation!) to have a good idea of what I do not like. So in designing this site, I had a few goals in mind. The top priority was a clean, relatively graphics-free set of pages that allowed efficient access to the information contained within. The material should be organized in a logical manner with an easy to navigate structure. An aesthetically pleasing page was a second priority. The layout should be unobtrusive yet functional, and easy on the eye. Extraneous graphics also should be avoided for many reasons, but especially so as not to penalize those with low bandwith. (I regularly access this site both with a T1 connection and a 33.6K modem.)

I designed this site on an Apple Macintosh (actually, two Macs: a Blue and White Power Macintosh G3 and a PowerCenter Pro 180 Macintosh "clone"). I have tested it with both Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer, on MacOS and Windows systems. (Not to mention the odd Unix system.) Personally, I think it looks best under Netscape 4.5 or greater on the Mac -- my preferred way to access the Internet -- but the differences across programs and platforms are relatively minor.

The ease of maintaining a site is not, however, and I cannot recommend a Macintosh system highly enough for this purpose. I essentially have used one tool to design and maintain this site: BBEdit. I had occasions to use Photoshop and GraphicConverter (to touch-up some of the graphics), and either Fetch or NetFinder (to upload images, and for bulk up- and downloads), as well as the above-mentioned browsers. Adobe Acrobat was used to create downloadable files, most of which were created in LaTeX with OzTeX. Some of these LaTeX files were converted into HTML format using TtH. However, for a few documents I (unfortunately) had to use Microsoft Word. After much back-and-forth, I also decided to use Verdana, one of the Microsoft web fonts, on these pages. But if you don't wish to have these fonts installed (and I cannot blame you), the text should look just fine in Helvetica. If I can find a suitable non-Microsoft alternative, I will change this.

I must confess, I am pleased with the results so far. As you browse around I hope you will agree. But no site is perfect, and I welcome constructive suggestions. Thanks!
